SouthwellSouthwell

Southwell is England's smallest cathedral city.

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin, containing some of the finest medieval stone carving in country, became Southwell Cathedral in 1884.

A prosperous market town, Southwell boasts many fine Regency houses but its greatest treasure is the Minster, visible for some 20 miles across the Trent Valley.

Just outside the town is 19th century Workhouse, restored by the National Trust and now a facinating museum.

Nearby attractions include the Upton Hall Time Museum and the Bramley Apple Exhibition.

Southwell Cathedral Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin
Southwell is England's smallest cathedral city. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin became Southwell Cathedral in 1884. The Archbishop of York also had a palace here and by the 13th century Southwell was a cathedral city in all but name. The earliest church on the site was established by Archbishop Oskytel in 956 AD. The chapter-house, built in the 13th century has exceptional carvings immortalising the trees and hedgerows of the countryside. Other features are the tomb of Archbishop Sandys, who died in 1588 (the year of the Armada) and the lectern.
