This area was first settled in Saxon times (the suffix 'ton' means an enclosure or fenced clearing). 

Today Sutton-in-Ashfield's main tourist attraction is its sundial, the largest in Europe. 

Nearby is the Teversal Trail Visitor Centre.

Brierley Forest Park Skegby Road, Huthwaite NG17
Between Huthwaite and Sutton Hill, a 250 acre forest park created in 1999 from former agricultural land, a recreation ground, derelict land and the spoil tip of Brierley Colliery. Woodlands, wildflower meadows, wetlands and ponds providing a range of habitats, nature conservation areas.  Features sculptures in tranquil scenery reflecting the xoal mining heritage. Visitor centre, picnic site and recreation areas.

Teversal Trail Visitor Centre Carnarvon Street, off Fackley Road, Teversal, Sutton-in-Ashfield NG17 3HJ
Off B6014, the Teveral Trail Visitor Centre is at a focal point on a network of trails and walks. The Teversal and Pleasley Trails network (former colliery railway tracks) run through some of the most beautiful rural and historic parts of the district. Highlights along the trails include Hardwick Hall, the unspoilt village of Old Teversal and Silverhill Wood (the highest point in Nottinghamshire). Teversal Pastures and one of the tracks have been designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The Teversal Sculpture Trail, including stone carvings, mosaics, benches and wood sculpture, is the work of 200 community members working with professional artists. The Visitor Centre has refreshments and exhibitions and craft displays.
