WorksopWorksop

Lying to the north of Nottinghamshire, this unique market town stands in some of Britain's most beautiful countryside.

Worksop is known as the 'gateway to the Dukeries', refering to to the nearby ducal residencies at Rufford, Thoresby, Clumber and Welbeck.

The influence of these great families is reflected today at Bridge Street and Bridge Place where coloured stone is set in the paving of the pedestrianized streets depicts heraldic crests.  There is also a paved maze featuring a heraldic lion and the unicorn.

Open-air markets are held in this thriving town every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The town boasts a splendid Norman parish church.  Founded in 1103, the Worksop Priory Church of Our Lady and St Cuthbert became the parish church following Henry VIII's Disolution of the Monasteries.

Worksop's other attractions include the Mr Straw's Nouse (owned by the National Trust), the Pilgrim Fathers' Story and the Harley Gallery, a contemporary art gallery.

Nearby are the Creswell Crags Museum and Education Centre and the parks to the south of the town are the beginning of Sherwood Forest.

Worksop Tourist Attractions

Worksop Priory and Gatehouse Worksop Priory Church of Our Lady and St Cuthbert, Priorswell road, Worksop

Eastern end of the B6024, just south-east of Worksop town centre. Founded in 1103, the Priory is an example of Norman architecture. The Augustian priory was erected by William de Lovetot, Lord of the Manor and following the Disolution of the Monasteries, the townspeople were allowed to keep the nave of the Priory as their parish church, while the Gatehouse became the vicarage - later the first elementary school in England. The monastic buildings were plundered for stone and lead and collapsed. The surviving nave, western front and twin towers date from the 12th century.  A feature is a glass-covered opening in the north wall housing part of an ancient skull with an arrow head embedded in it. The early-14th century Gatehouse has pre-Reformation statuary and an unusual wayside shrine to house an image of the Virgin.

Time stands still in this Edwardian semi-detatched house. The house, dating from 1905, was purchased by William Straw senior in 1920. In 1932 William Straw died whilst gardening.  His death was such a shock to his wife Florence and their sons, William and Walter, that nothing was to be changed in the house from that day forward. When William died he left the untouched contents to the National Trust. Fascinating contents including family letters, photographs, Victorian furniture, clothing and household objects. Museum room with new exhibitions every year with family belongings previously hidden away. Suburban garden.

The Pilgrim Fathers in the 16th century, began to reform the church system. As 'Separatists', they believed in freedom of worship and religious tolerance.  Two of the leading Separatists were a Scrooby postmaster, William Brewster, and a parson from Babworth. Richard Clyfton. Their views fell foul of the Crown and in fear of their lives they were forced to flee to America. The story is illustrated together with an insight into the live and times of Tudor England.
