Arnold
|
|
|
Lying
4 miles north-east of Nottingham, Arnold is now a popular
residential suburb of the city.
Arnold
developed dramatically from a village to a town with the invention
of stocking machine (created by William Lee of Calverton).
The town is still known for the manufacture of hosiery but
lace making, brewing and soap making are also important industries.
Arnold's
most notable landmark is probably the Home Ales building,
in Daybrook, which now houses the county council offices.
Established in 1875, the independent brewery was famous for
its beer mats featuring Robin Hood. In 1986 Home Ales was
purchased by Scottish & Newcastle and the bewery closed in
1996.
Arnold
was the birthplace of Richard Parkes Bonington (1802 - 1828)
one of England's finest painters. The Bonington Theatre in
the High Street, named after the artist, is one of the highlights
of the town.
