Great
Ayton,
a village on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, smaller than
town of Guisborough just down the A173, but probably more
of interest to the visitor.
The village
was the childhood home of the explorer Captain James Cook
, who here between the ages of 8 to 16. The school he went
to is now the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum.
In the
village is his statue, and you can walk up to his Monument,
a 60ft high obelisk, on Easby Moor and enjoy the view, you
can also try a walk to Roseberry Topping which rises to 1051
feet.
All Saints
Church, 12th century, has the Cook family grave in the graveyard.
Nearby
Guisborough, a larger town is worth a visit for its cobbled
streets and market, as well as the Priory.
