Northallerton

Northallerton,
a market town in the Vale of York, just off the A1, the Great
North Road.
The town was a favourite
for being destroyed, by William the Conqueror as well as the
Scots Due to its position it once had four coaching inn. Railways
arrived in the 1800's linking London to Edinburgh and Newcastle.
The market is old,
started in 1200, and is on Wednesday and Saturday, there are
also two annual fairs.
Around the town points
of interest are the church of All Saints which dates from
1120 and outside the town a memorial stone marks the site
of the Battle of the Standard when the English defeated the
Scots in 1138.

Grace Priory, A684 east then north on A19, founded
in 1398, is the best preserved Carthusian monastery in England.
Set in wooded countryside,
restored monk's cell, 17th century manor house with exhibition.
