Ripon
|
|
|
Ripon, famous
for its cathedral, and called "The Cathedral City of the Dales",
but is one of England's smallest cities.
It has a large market
place with a 90 foot high obelisk used by the official red-coated
hornblower to sound the 'Setting of the Watch'; every day
at 9pm for the last 1,000 years. Market day is Thursday.
There are many old
buildings to enjoy in the town, including the 14th century
Wakeman House and Town Hall, 1801.
Money has been spent
on the town recently, and the restored areas include the Canal
Basin, the most northerly point of the English canal system.
For a bit more excitement
Ripon has a racehorse course, and there are things to see
and do out and about around the town.
