Scarborough,
for all the fun of the seaside.
Two large
bays separated by a harbour and headland make up this popular
family seaside resort.
South
Bay is the oldest resort area with arcades, gift shops and
cafe's, and lifts to take you down to the beach and the promenade
from the town above.
Originally
an exclusive resort after the medicinal properties of the
town's spring waters were discovered in in 1626 .The arrival
of the railway made Scarborough accessible to all, and the
hotels spread out over South Cliff.
Today
Scarborough is a top English traditional resort with its own
shopping centre, the Brunswick Centre, with all the main High
Street stores.
North
Bay is popular with surfers, being more open
A good
viewing point is Oliver's Mount, nearby is the site of the
12th century castle, built on the site of a Roman signalling
station.
All the
traditional seaside activities are here, as well as parks,
bowling, bowls, cinemas, clubs, bars, live shows, museums,
and amusements. The Stephen Theatre is Alan Ayckbourn's home
theatre and premiers his plays, the theatre also has a cinema
and a restaurant and shop.
The railway
station at Scarborough has one of the longest benches in world
seating 228 people.
St Mary's
Church is where Anne Bronte is buried after she came to the
town to take the sea air whilst ill, she died after a few
days in Scarborough.
