Skipton, a
market town known as "The Gateway To The Dales",
the Dales are north of the town.
Originally
the town prospered on the sheep and wool trade, with its Norman
castle being built 900 years ago. With the Industrial Revolution
came the Leeds Liverpool Canal and the building of mills,
Skipton has always been an important centre. Famous as home
of the Skipton Building Society.
Today
the colourful market still survives, in the High Street every
Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The town also has
a shopping centre, Craven Court. Most retail chains can be
found there or in the High Street, mixed in with smaller specialist
local shops.
Small
streets to explore and walks along the canal, with boat trips
available.
