N YorkshireThirsk

Thirsk, the 'James Herriot's Town' - as it was this town as Darrowby that featured in the James Herriot's vet books.

Alf Wight was the "real" James Herriot, a veterinary surgery who practiced at 23 Kirkgate, now the centrepiece of "The World of James Herriot" Visitor Centre.

Thirsk has a central cobbled market square surrounded by shops, and places to eat. Its existence is largely due to its location at the bottom of the Hamilton Hills and its use as a staging post for coaches going north from London. Still in existence are the eighteenth century Three Tuns and Golden Fleece.

Thirsk has another famous son, Thomas Lord, who founded Lords Cricket Ground. 14 Kirkgate houses Thirsk Museum and is where he was born.

Leisure facilities include The Ritz Cinema, an 1912 building a Swimming Pool with sauna and gym facilities. At the centre of Thirsk lies the cobbled market square surrounded by shops and places to eat.

Thirsk is well known for its connections with horse racing. The racecourse started in the 18th century and holds 12 Flat meetings a year between April and September, including two evening meetings.

St Mary's Church is worth a visit, over 500 years old, built on the site of a Norman church.

The town has an annual festival in the second week in July.
