York, one of
the most famous cities in England, with a long history, from
the Vikings to the Romans to the present day.
Busy in summer, perhaps
ideal fro a spring or autumn break when there are less crowds,
most of the the attractions are open all year. Whenever you
go its a most pleasant city.
Founded by the Romans,
it was renamed Jorvick by the Vikings, and after they had
gone was further developed by the Normans. The area has been
subject to much excavation, visit the museums for the evidence!
The main centre is
surrounded by the 13th century city walls with four gateways,
or bars, into the centre. You can take a walk around these
walls.
The Middle ages saw
the city used as a trading centre, but it took until the 18th
century to recover from Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries.
The city, dominated
by the cathedral, York Minster, which has survived several
fires, reflects the whole of English history, and its preservation
means you can still walk along medieval streets, the most
famous being The Shambles area.
Guided walks are available
on a number of themes, or take a boat trip!
Lots to
do in the city, with good shops as well, and plenty to see
in the countryside around as well.
