The attractive and historic fishing harbour of Fishguard is one of the larger towns in Pembrokeshire, with shops and amenities serving a wide area.
The Lower Town is the oldest part of Fishguard, with quaint fishing cottages looking over its pretty harbour and beach. It was the heart of the old fishing village, which was later enlarged with the creation of the main harbour in the early 20th century, providing a regular ferry crossing to Ireland. Stena Line currently runs two services daily to Rosslare. The main sandy beach at Goodwick is great for families with a range of cafes and shops nearby.
Fishguard was the site of the last invasion on British soil - by French forces in 1797. A tapestry in the style of Bayeux was created to mark the bicentenary and now hangs in the Town Hall. The Oceanlab in the harbour has a sealife exhibition, play area and also displays information about the town.
Fishguard was also used as the location for the 1972 film version of Under Milk Wood starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, based on the best-known work of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
