Despite its English name, the pretty little seaside town of Newport has been around for a while. It was established in Norman times, and retains its historic feel and 12th century church and ruined castle, now part of a private home.
Its Welsh name of Trefdraeth is a more fitting description, meaning the town on the sands. It is the excellent golden sandy beaches that have made Newport such a popular place to visit. Along with pastel coloured cottages and an excellent selection of cafes, restaurants, craft shops and galleries it is a very pleasant place to spend a while.
As well as the coastline, Newport is well placed to explore the Preseli Hills, with scenic views and numerous prehistoric sites such as the Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber. Nearby Castell Henllys is a fantastic recreated Iron Age hill fort providing living history demonstrations.
