Pembroke tourist information

Pembroke is a handsome town famous for its wonderful 12th century castle.

This hugely impressive stone fortress is surrounded on three sides by water and is the quintessential Welsh castle with round towers and ramparts with great views looking down over the town and surrounding area. It was the birthplace of Henry VII in 1457, who went on to found the great Tudor Dynasty, and is the largest castle in Wales in private hands.

Surrounded by the old defensive city walls, the town has some attractive buildings and a good selection of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Other historic buildings include the Priory Church at Monkton which stands on the site of a 11th century monastery of which some evidence remains. Just outside Pembroke is Lamphey Bishop's Palace, a sumptuous 14th century house.

Pembroke is close to some of the best coastline in Wales. Downstream are the bustling ports and dockyards at Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock, and then on to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with miles of unspoilt cliffs and beaches to explore.
