The Cathedral city of St David's is a pretty and historic town, final resting place of the patron saint of Wales and set on a beautiful stretch of coastline known as St Davids peninsula.
Saint David founded a monastery here in the 6th century, and his grave became an important Christian shrine and place of pilgrimage in medieval times. Construction of the beautiful present-day Cathedral was begun on the same site in the 12th century and the building has continued to be added to and restored ever since. Today it also home to a exhibition, gallery and restaurant.
Next to the Cathedral is the beautiful 13th ruin of the Bishop's Palace, a magnificent residence for the rich and powerful church leaders. The town itself is a very pleasant place with attractive buildings, cafes, pubs and individual shops.
St Davids peninsula has some of the best coastal scenery in Wales. Particularly beautiful are the many islands and rocky outcrops, the largest of which is Ramsay Island, a remote RSPB nature reserve known for its seabird, dolphin and seal populations. The area also has great beaches, particularly Whitesands Bay which is popular with families and surfers.
