Kinross tourist information

Set on peaceful Loch Leven, Kinross is an attractive and solid market town, with some beautiful old buildings and historic grand residences.

Loch Leven castle is a 14th century fortress set on its own island in the loch and only accessible by boat. This castle has seen many iconic historical figures within its walls, was once captured by William Wallace, and served as the prison of such notable royals as Robert II and Mary Queen of Scots.

Kinross House was built in more peaceful times, and was one of the first major Scottish houses not to be built with fortifications. This grand 17th century early classical mansion is privately owned, but the stunning formal gardens which reach down to the shores of Loch Leven are open to the public in the summer season.

Close by are also the ruins of 15th century Burleigh Castle, with an interesting partly-circular tower.

On a more modern note, Balado park near Kinross is now the home of the annual T in the Park music festival. Taking place every year in July it has seen performances by hundreds of leading bands including R.E.M, Oasis, Eminem and Coldplay. Tickets normally sell out in record time.
