The ancient royal town of Perth is set on the wide River Tay, and was effectively the capital of Scotland in ancient times when the kings of Scotland were crowned on the Stone of Destiny at nearby Old Scone.
Perth is a thriving and compact town, with some handsome architecture and an attractive river frontage. There is a wealth of things to see and do, good shopping and a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants. Visitor attractions include several excellent museums, such as the main Perth Museum and Art Gallery, set in a grand domed neoclassical building, and The Fergusson Gallery set in another impressive circular building.
The Palace of Scone is 2 miles north of Perth. The imposing Gothic structure seen today dates from the 19th century and has wonderful furnishings and a lovely estate. For many castles that would be enough, but Scone is also the ancient seat of Scottish Kings, with a 2000 year old history dating back to at least to the Pictish era, and notably Kenneth I in the 9th century AD. He brought the Stone of Destiny to his capital and later a medieval abbey was founded on this spot. Monarchs including Macbeth, Robert the Bruce, right up to the current Queen Elizabeth II were crowed on the stone, and a replica now stands in the palace.
Other historic sites close to Perth include the beautiful castles of Elcho and Huntingtower, and the enormous 18th century Arkwright cotton mill at Stanley. The beautiful Branklyn Garden makes a striking contrast to the wild open countryside.
