The charming village of Pitlochry is the gateway to the Highlands. It thrived in the 19th century on the tourism brought by the patronage of Queen Victoria and the railways, and this heritage can be seen today in the fine and imposing architecture.
Pitlochry still very much caters for tourists today, many of which visit for traditional flavour on their way north up to the Highland regions. The Scottish Hydro Electric Visitor Centre has an interesting exhibition, and also houses a glass fronted salmon ladder where wild fish can be seen making their heroic journey upstream to spawn. The small and quaint Edradour distillery is also a popular attraction.
However, the surrounding countryside around Pitlochry is the main attraction, with stunning woodland and moorland hills and remote mountains, including Ben Vrackie. Queen's View gives a wonderful panorama over Loch Tummel and the surrounding hills, and there is Forestry Commission visitor centre on the site.
