The picturesque small town of Hay-on-Wye is now well known throughout the world thanks to its annual literary festival, which draws many thousands of visitors in the summer to hear top authors, poets, comedians and musicians.
Located right on the border of England and Wales on the banks of the scenic River Wye, Hay-on-Wye is a great place to visit throughout the year.
This pretty 'Book Town' has over thirty bookshops and many other interesting and individual shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Hay-on-Wye is dominated by the splendid remains of a ruined castle, originally Norman but rebuilt in the 12th century, and its adjacent 17th century mansion. The restored parts of the building are today occupied (unsurprisingly for Hay-on-Wye) by the Hay Castle Bookshop.
The town is a good base for exploring the scenic Welsh Marches (border area), and is located within the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park on the edge of the Black Mountains, with wide open spaces ideal for walking and all manner of outdoor activities.
