Machynlleth is a handsome historic town with some fine buildings. Its most recognisable feature is the striking Victorian clock tower in the centre, built in 1873 and recently restored.
The town has plenty of attractive old buildings, shops, pubs and restaurants, and a lovely stone bridge across the River Dyfi.
Machynlleth is surrounded by rolling Welsh hills and close to the northern Cambrian mountains, making it a popular base for hill walkers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Attractions in Machynlleth include the Welsh Museum of Modern Art in the Tabernacle Gallery.
The Owain Glyndwr Centre is found in the medieval Old Parliament Building, said to be where this Welsh hero was crowned Prince of Wales in 1404, making Machynlleth the original (unofficial) capital of Wales. Y Plas Machynlleth is a historic house which hosts events, theatre, and houses the Dyfi Arts Guild Gallery.
This area of Wales is also known for its environmentalism and followers of alternative culture. One example is the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), a demonstration and education centre promoting a more sustainable way of life.
