Historic Newtown was founded in the 13th century (despite its name), an attractive market town and formerly an important centre of the Welsh woollen industry in the 19th century.
The town has several attractions which celebrate its rich heritage, such as the Newtown Textile museum and the Robert Owen museum, dedicated to the influential social reformer who campaigned for fair treatment of factory workers.
Newtown also houses the Oriel Davies Gallery, an excellent contemporary arts centre, and several theatres such as the popular Theatr Hafren.
Just to the north of Newtown is another cultural landmark, the beautiful timber framed mansion of Gregynog Hall, which hosts an annual classical music festival. The pretty gardens are also open to visitors to enjoy.
