Rhayader is a handsome market town set on the River Wye, and at the crossroads of highways across Wales which made it a historically important staging post in past centuries.
It is also the gateway to the particularly scenic Elan Valley to the West of the town - known as the 'Lake District' of Wales - with its beautiful and peaceful landscapes of man-made dams and reservoirs.
Local attractions include Welsh Royal Crystal, where visitors can tour the factory and see demonstrations of glass blowing, and the red kite feeding station, where these magnificent birds of prey can be seen at close quarters from specially designed hides.
The Elan Valley is a must-see, take the small road south-west from Rhayader towards the reservoirs
