Welshpool is a traditional town close to the border with England, with pretty streets ideal for strolling and passing the time. Many of its buildings are quaint timber framed cottages in the black and white colours distinctive of the area.
Welshpool also has one of the most popular visitor attractions in Wales - Powis Castle.
This stunning castle probably has 13th century origins, but it was continuously improved over the centuries, culminating in the magnificent historic home seen today. It is owned by the National Trust, and also has splendid gardens and grounds.
There is plenty to see and do in the area, including the lovely gardens of Glansevern Hall - which also hosts the Welsh Food Festival in September- and the Dingle Nursery and Garden.
Take a scenic ride on a steam engine at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, walk along the Montgomery Canal or visit the Powysland Museum of local history.
Welshpool is also a great base for enjoying the best of the beautiful Welsh Countryside - from the rolling hills of the Severn Valley, to Lake Vyrnwy and the Cambrian Mountains to the West, or the Brecon Beacons to the south.
