The traditional market town of Aberdare is the largest in the Rhondda Cynon Taf, and known as Queen of the Valleys.
The town was at the centre of the massive expansion of the coal mining industry that took place in the industrial revolution, surrounded by the collieries and ironworks of the Welsh Valleys. While the mines have now closed, its 19th century buildings are a reminder of this era, with some grand Victorian buildings and streets of typical terraced cottages.
Aberdare has a good range of shops, restaurants and pubs, and also has an excellent local museum and art galley for you to visit, housed in a former ironworks. The Coliseum is a popular theatre in an interesting Art Deco building.
