Historic Llantrisant is an attractive small town in the Ely Valley, with steep cobbled streets and interesting shops and buildings.
In contrast with many of the towns and villages in the Welsh Valleys which grew up during the 19th century coal mining boom, Llantrisant has more ancient origins. Its 13th castle was once one of the most strategically important in South Wales, and is now solitary ruined tower. The famous longbow archers of the town played a crucial role in the English victory against the French at the battle of Crecy in 1346.
Llantrisant today is an pleasant town to visit, with some good traditional pubs and the Model House Craft and Design Centre housed in a former workhouse building on the central square.
Close by is the large and popular out of town Talbot Green Shopping Park. The Royal Mint is also located in Llantrisant, having moved there from London in the 1960's.
