Set where the river Taff meets the Rhondda, Pontypridd is a large and bustling market town.
The town spreads over the valley floor, surrounded by steep wooded hills. There are a number of bridges over the rivers, including the distinctive stone single-span Old Bridge built in 1756 which has become a symbol of the town.
Pontypridd is a hub of the local valleys communities, with a wide range of shops and services in busy streets lined with Victorian buildings. There is a museum and an excellent arts centre - the Muni - both housed in attractive former Chapels. Music is also a tradition, the Welsh National anthem was composed here and (Sir) Tom Jones was born nearby.
The Welsh Valleys were synonymous with coal mining, which shaped the character of the local towns and villages in the 19th and 20th centuries. You can learn all about this rich industrial heritage at the nearby The Rhondda Heritage Park.
