Located in the heart of the Scottish Borders, Galashiels is a town built on the textile industry, and the woollen mills gave it a prosperity that can be seen in the fine stone buildings.
One of the most notable monuments in the town is the impressive sculpture of a Border Reiver on horseback, depicting one of the lawless raiding clans that once roamed the Anglo-Scottish borders. The horse was always important here, and the Braw Lads Gathering in late June sees a mounted parade to celebrate the 1599 awarding of the towns burgh Charter.
Sir Walter Scott wrote two poems about Galashields, including Braw Lads. Abbotsford House, his beautiful home on the banks of the nearby River Tweed, is open to visitors. In the town centre is also the Old Gala House, a museum of local life and art gallery.
