Kelso is a lovely border town on the River Tweed, the heart of which is a wide market square.
The town has attractive architecture and historic sites which tell the story of the long battles with the English across the border.
Kelso Abbey was founded in the 12th century but destroyed in the 16th. The beautiful ruins are now a popular visior attraction, and one can imagine the site in its former glory. Only the fragmentary remains of Roxburgh Castle remain however.
Nearby is the enormous Floors Castle, the seat of the Dukes of Roxburghe and the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. The beautiful house and gardens are open to the public.
The catastrophic (for the Scottish) Battle of Flodden took place nearby, just across the border close to the English village of Branxton.
