The ancient town of Selkirk, set in the twin valleys of Ettrick and Yarrow, has had a long and proud history since at least Roman times.
In 1298 William Wallace was proclaimed Guardian of Scotland in the forest Kirk. Like many in the borders, the town was caught up in Anglo-Scottish conflict and was largely destroyed following the battle of Flodden in 1513. 200 centuries later the writer Sir Walter Scott was Sheriff here for 33 years.
The town today is an attractive place for a visit, and shows evidence of the wool industry which has dominated the area since the 18th century. Lochcarron of Scotland is a famous name in textiles, and its Selkirk mill has a visitor centre where tartan weaving can be viewed.
Don't leave Selkirk without trying another of its famous products, the Selkirk Bannock, a delicious Scottish fruit loaf.
