Fort Augustusis set in wonderful Highland scenery on the southern shores of Loch Ness, and on the Caledonian Canal, where a flight of five locks connect it to the lake.
The original 'Fort' has now gone, but this small town is an attractive stopping point on the canal and also the Great Glen Way - a popular long-distance footpath that takes walkers the length of the beautiful valley that divides Scotland in two.
The main attraction of this area is the great outdoors, but there are also plenty of things to see and do in the town, including the Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre run by British Waterways, and the Clansman Centre where guides in authentic dress demonstrate the history of Highland life in an interactive style.
