With breathtakingly stunning scenery, Glen Coe is very probably the most beautiful place in Scotland.
A steeply-sided sweeping valley, the stunning mountains give a feeling of utter remoteness but are easily viewed from the road that passes through the glen (the A82). These include Buachaille Etive Mor, Bidean nam Bian and the Three Sisters. Famous the world over for this dramatic scenery, it has featured in such films as Highlander, Rob Roy, and more recently Harry Potter.
This area is perfect for walking and climbing. The Glencoe Mountain Resort was Scotlands original ski resort and also offers mountain biking, paragliding and other activities in the summer months.
Lower down the valley is the lovely lake of Loch Leven, and the small village of Glencoe, where there is a large and interesting visitor centre run by the National Trust for Scotland.
Glen Coe has a place in Scottish history for a notorious and tragic event. In 1692, 38 of the MacDonald clan were massacred by troops under the command of Captain Robert Campbell (despite being their guests) for not taking an oath of allegiance to the monarchs William and Mary by the given deadline. Many others died of exposure, and there is a monument to the fallen in Glencoe village.
