Set on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park,Grantown-on-Spey is a handsome, traditional Scottish Town.
Largely created in the 18th century by the local Laird Sir James Grant, the town enjoyed great prosperity in the 19th century and many of the fine stone buildings date from this time. The Grantown Museum gives visitors an insight into local history.
The area around Grantown-on-Spey is particularly scenic, with the unspoilt Cairngorm Mountains and Anagach Woods nearby to enjoy by walking, hiking or more energetic pursuits such as climbing and mountain-biking. The fast-flowing River Spey is famous for its excellent salmon fishing.
Ballindalloch to the North of Grantown is a beautiful 16th century castle often called the Pearl of the North, and the large estate offers fishing and golf.
Grantown is also the gateway to the 'Whisky Trail' of Speyside distilleries that have made this region of Scotland so renowned for the national drink. The town is a great base from which to travel just a short distance east to sample famous names such as Glenfiddich and Glenlivet.
