Known as the Capital of the Highlands, Inverness is a thriving city with ancient origins set on the River Ness.
Capital of the Picts from at least the 5th century, Inverness has seen its share of battles and events putting it firmly on the historical map. Robert the Bruce fought here in the 14th century, and it was the setting the castle of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Mary Queen of Scots visited in 1562 but was denied entry and later put the governor of Inverness castle to death for his trouble. Later conflicts saw the armies of Oliver Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie stationed in the city.
Built on the remains of much earlier fortresses, the current Inverness castle is an attractive building dating from the 19th century, and is the local administrative County Hall.
The city has a bustling yet compact centre, with some excellent shopping opportunities, particularly in the new Eastgate Centre and the charming Victorian covered market. There are also numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. There is also an excellent museum and art gallery.
The Caledonian Canal runs from Inverness through the Great Glen to Corpach near Fort William, and a cruise along its length is a wonderful way to take in much of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland - including Loch Ness and views of Ben Nevis.
Close to Inverness is the site of the infamous Battle of Culloden, where the Jacobite uprising was finally defeated in 1746. The National Trust for Scotland maintain the battlefield as a memorial, and there is also a visitor centre with multi-media exhibitions on the battle and highland history.
Other historic sites nearby include the Clava Cairns - a 4,000 year old burial site with many intriguing features in a tranquil woodland area.
