The Isle of Skye is one of Scotlands most beautiful places. A remote and peaceful island, with mountains that rise up dramatically from the sea.
Many people know of the island through the Skye Boat Song, which tells of the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie to Skye after his defeat at Culloden in the 18th century. Famously disguised as a serving maid, he was assisted by Flora MacDonald, who was later imprisoned in the Tower of London.
The South of the island is reached either by the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh, or by ferry from Mallaig to the port of Armadale. Here the landscape is dominated by the Cuillin mountains, giving ever-changing scenery depending on the weather. Aird of Sleat is an ideal place to appreciate the stunning fjord-like coastline, with fabulous views across to the mainland.
Further north is Portree, the capital of Skye, a pretty harbour town with white washed and pastel cottages along the quayside. This is a popular tourist destination with lots of local amenities. The Royal Hotel was where Bonnie Prince Charlie took his leave of Skye en route to France.
Also in the north are the towns of Dunvegan, with its imposing castle, and Uig, where you can catch a boat onwards to the Hebrides. The rugged landscape here on the northern Trotternish penisula is also stunning, and a visit to see the rock formation of the Old Man of Storr and the patterned cliffs of Kilt Rock are a must.
No trip to the island would be complete without sampling the local Talisker whiskey. The distillery is on the western side of the island and offers tours and tastings.
