Tain is a historic town with some grand stone buildings, notably the old Tollboth, an imposing turreted tower dating from the 17th century that was formerly a jail and courthouse.
Tain is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, dating from 1066, and was once famous as a place of pilgrimage to the shrine of St Duthus. Today there are 3 churches that celebrate this, the St Duthus Collegiate Church dating from the 14th century, and 2 ruined former chapels.
Tain Through Time is an award-winning local history complex, with exhibitions on the Pilgrimage and incorporating the Tain and District Museum. This offers activities such as dressing up and an audio tour of the Collegiate church. Other attractions include Tain Pottery, where you can see local ceramics being made and decorated.
Just outside Tain is the world-famous Glenmorangie distillery, makers of the most popular malt whisky in Scotland. The distillery offers tours and there is an excellent visitor centre, and, of course - a shop.
