ShropshireEllesmere

Ellesmere, visit this attractive market town of Ellesmere stands in the far north of the country. The Ancient Britons were the first to settle here, on the shores of a magnificent glacial mere.

Today the town is a charming mix of medieval streets, timber-framed buildings and Georgian houses.

The church of St Mary overlooking the Mere was built by the Knights of St John in 1225.  Its 15th century chapel is decorated with the badges of the lords of the manor and castle of Ellesmere.

The town has a wide range of individual shops and also hosts antique markets, events and festivals.

Ellesmere was the birthplace of the Llangollen Canal, designed and built by Thomas Telford from his offices in the town.

The canal and the Mere lie a short distance from the town. The abundant wildlife on the Mere can be observed from the Visitor Centre using CCTV.  Beside the Mere is the Arboretum and Cremone Gardens.  There are a number of easy walks that take visitors from the Mere into the town and along the canal or through the gardens.
