ShropshireTelford

Telford takes its name from the Thomas Telford, one of the principal architects of the Industrial Revolution.  The great engineer was made surveyor public works for Shropshire in 1787 and his contribution to the area is still clearly seen today.

The 'new town' of Telford was created in 1968 to provide homes for the overspill populatons of Birmingham and the Black Country.

Within the town are a number of mature settlements, some dating back centuries. One of the most famous areas is Coalbrookdale, where Abraham Darby began the Industrial Revolution in 1709.  The new town is proud of its industrial past and today is at the forefront of modern business and industry.

Telford's prosperity greatly improved after the town was linked to the M54 and it is now one of the UK's fastest growing and most successful new towns. It is also a 'forest city', achieved by lining roads and available spaces with thousands of tree saplings.

The popular shopping centre has big name stores and the Telford International Centre is the 6th largest exhibition centre in the UK. 10 screen cinema, ice skating, Super Bowl, night clubs and more here.

Lots of attractions for children, including the 500 acre Telford Town Park, with leisure facilities and play areas as well as 'Wonderland', a theme park where nusery rhymes and fairy stories are brought to life.

Nearby is Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom and the Telford Steam Railway.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site at Ironbridge has museums illustrating the facinating history of Coalbrookdale and you must visit here.

A number of folk tales are associated with the Wrekin and the peak has also received frequent mentions in literary works. JRR Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings, lived nearby and the Shropshire countryside around the Wrekin was his inspiration for Middle Earth.
