Welcome to South Ayrshire ...
South Ayrshire is an area rich in culture and history, with its principal towns dotted along the coastline looking over to the beautiful Isle of Arran. It makes an ideal base to explore the best of southern Scotland.
Famed as the birthplace of the iconic Scottish poet Robert Burns, also known as the Bard of Ayrshire, the region draws large numbers of visitors to places associated with him and mentioned in his works. Author of such popular works as Auld Lang Syne and Tam o' Shanter, Burns was born in Alloway near Ayr, and the town has a number of attractions dedicated to him at the Burns National Heritage Park.
It is probable that another of Scotland's most famous sons, Robert the Bruce, was also born in the county in 1274, in the now ruined castle of Turnberry set on scenic and rugged cliffs.
The larger towns of Ayr, Prestwick, Troon and Girvan are set on the Firth of Clyde and retain their strong links with the sea, with harbours, marinas and sandy beaches drawing visitors. From Girvan you can catch a boat to the spectacular domed island of Ailsa Craig. Another highlight of the region is the splendid Culzean Castle in its wonderful coastal setting.
