Created as Scotland's first new town in 1947, East Kilbride, grew in the 1960s into a thriving modern settlement. The old village remains within the town today.
Hardly beautiful, the new town is however functionally designed, and its greatest draw is undoubtedly the huge East Kilbride Shopping Centre, a covered network of 5 interlinked malls with 200 shops, cinema, ice rink and other attractions.
If you prefer your entertainment out of doors, the nearby James Hamilton Heritage Park is a loch-side watersports centre offering a wide variety of activities such as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. It also has 2 children's adventure playgrounds, bird watching, and a cafe to recover in afterwards.
The Museum of Rural Life is an award-winning attraction allowing all ages to get closer to the countryside and find out more about living and working on the land. The museum has a working 1950's-style farm, exhibitions on farming, historic machinery, and the lives of the people who have worked the land in Scotland for centuries.
More restful is Calderglen Country Park and Langlands Moss Nature Reserve. The park has some beautiful walks and nature trails through its scenic wooded valley and parkland, as well as a children's zoo, conservatory and host of other attractions at the lovely Torrance House.
