Hamilton is a handsome market town, named after the Hamilton Family who were granted their estates by Robert the Bruce. The family's grand house is now gone, but their huge Romanesque domed Mausoleum remains an imposing reminder at 37m tall with one of the recorded longest echoes in the country.
The town centre also has some fine buildings, such as the Edwardian Town Hall and the William Adam designed church. Adam also designed the graceful hunting lodge in the beautiful Chatelherault Country Park, once part of the Hamilton estate. The remains of the ruined 16th century Cadzow Castle can also be seen in the grounds. To find out more about the fascinating history of this historic area visit the Low Parks museum in the town centre.
For a more modern day out, Hamilton Park Racecourse is a popular sporting attraction, and horse racing has been enjoyed in the town since the 18th century. The course is now also a venue for live music performances by leading pop artists.
