Welcome to South Lanarkshire ...
From the rural beauty of the countryside to towns rich in history, and just a stones throw from the city of Glasgow, South Lanarkshire offers much to see and do.
The north of the area borders Glasgow and has many historic attractions. The magnificent and enormous Bothwell castle stands on the River Clyde and dates from the 13th century. Near to the handsome county town of Hamilton is the graceful Georgian Chatelherault hunting lodge, built for the local Hamilton family estate. Close by is the David Livingstone centre, a museum dedicated to the famous Victorian explorer, and there are no less than 6 intriguing museums in the town of Biggar to the South East.
In complete contrast, modern East Kilbride was Scotland's first 'new town' and is now home to Scotland's largest undercover shopping centre with its interlinked 'mile of malls' drawing shopaholics from a wide area.
The South of the region has some stunning and wild open spaces. The Clyde Valley Walkway runs down from Glasgow along the river through some beautiful countryside, to the attractive town of Lanark and the UNESCO World Hertitage Site of New Lanark, a wonderful restored 18th century mill village, as well as the lovely Falls of Clyde. For those who really want to get away from it all, there are great walking and hiking opportunities in the remote Southern Uplands, including panoramic views from the summit of Tinto near Biggar, and further south to the rugged Lowther Hills.
