Strathaven is a small and bustling market town, with independent shops and some very attractive older buildings, many painted in bright colours making it a pretty and cheerful place.
In the heart of this historic town are the picturesque ruins of Strathaven Castle, rebuilt in the 15th century on the remains of an even older fortress, which fell into disrepair in 18th century. The ruins can be visited today and include a nearly complete circular tower.
Strathaven Park is a popular family day out, with play areas, boating pond and miniature railway. It also is the setting for The Strathaven International Balloon festival held annually in the summer. This is one of the UK's largest displays, with a huge number of hot air balloons flying in the morning and evening, as well as a beautiful 'night glow' display after dark.
This part of Strathaven Park was bequeathed to the town by local Victorian businessman John Hastie, who also gifted a museum to the town. The John Hastie Museum contains some of his own collections, as well as an exhibition of local history.
