Close to Stirling is the attractive spa town of Bridge of Allan.
Home to the University of Stirling in its beautiful campus on the Airthrey Estate, it, and most of the surrounding area, is dominated by the huge and iconic Wallace Monument. This staggering 19th century tower stands 67m high and offers a fantastic panorama from its viewing gallery.
The town of Bridge of Allan grew in prosperity as a tourist centre in the 19th century. Visitors were drawn by the discovery of therapeutic spring waters and by the writings of Sir Walter Scott and others who described the beauty of this part of Scotland. It is still a popular place today, just a stones throw both from the city and the beautiful scenery of the Trossachs and Breadalbane.
Bridge of Allan also has its own micro-brewery, open to visitors and producing real ales with a local flavour.
