Oxted
lies south of the North Downs, near the border with Kent.
Old Oxted,
the most ancient part of the village, developed in medieval
times around agriculture and tanning. The charming area is
well known for its steep street lined with 17th and 18th century
cottages. Now designated a Conservation Area, Old Oxted has
now been by-passed by the A25.
In 1884
Oxted and Limpsfield Station opened on the London to East
Grinstead railway. 'New Oxted', split in two by the railway
line, grew up around the station and soon became a popular
commuter area.
Attractions
in Oxted include the
Barn Theatre, a thriving community theatre, and the Screen
at Oxted, part of the successful Screen chain.
Nearby
is Titsey
Place, a historic house set in 15 acres of beautiful gardens.
The house and gardens, set in a picturesque location beneath
the North Downs, have only been open to the public since 1993.
Just
down the road is Limpsfield
