The town of Pontypool was one of the driving forces of the Welsh industrial revolution, famed for its iron production which started in the area as early as the 15th century. By the 19th century, along with towns such as the Blaenavon to the north, it helped South Wales to become the greatest iron-producing region in the world.
After a period of decline, Pontypool has undergone significant regeneration, and has some interesting features.
Pontypool Park is an extensive area of parkland once forming a private estate, complete with a hilltop folly tower offering some great views, and a shell grotto.
Also in the park is Pontypool Museum, telling the story of the Torfaen valley, with particular emphasis on the iron and coal industry and Pontypool and Usk Japan (or lacquer) ware.
