Dumbarton is a thriving town on the Clyde estuary dominated by the impressive craggy peaks of Dumbarton Rock.
The Rock has been inhabited since at least the Iron Age due to the height of the volcanic rock which dominates the local area, and its strategically important position overlooking the Rivers Clyde and Leven. It was capital of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde in the Dark Ages, and the site of a castle and other fortifications throughout its history. It was used for military purposes until the Second World War and is now maintained by Historic Scotland.
Dumbarton itself is a bustling town which was once very much a part of the Clyde shipbuilding industry. This heritage is remembered today in the Denny Tank museum, Dumbarton, an experimental tank as long as a football pitch used by Victorian ship designers and now open to visitors.
Dumbarton's tourist information centre is just outside the town at Milton.
