West Dunbartonshire Tourist Information
Welcome to West Dunbartonshire ...
A land of gentle countryside with a ancient pedigree and a starring role in the industrial revolution, West Dunbartonshire links the city of Glasgow with Loch Lomond and a wilder Scotland beyond.
Set where the river Leven meets the Clyde estuary, its centrepiece is the dramatic Dumbarton castle, an awe-inspiring rocky outpost of sheer cliffs that rise out of the water and have a defensive site since Roman times.
Travel North and discover the beautiful Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, where the mountainous north meets the rolling countryside of the Leven valley. Magnificent Loch Lomond is Britain's largest freshwater lake by surface area and is best appreciated on water. Boat trips run from various places around the lake and also from the Loch Lomond shores complex, which also houses shops, cafes, and aquarium and other attractions.
This area also has a proud industrial heritage, notably in shipping and shipbuilding. The Clyde estuary thrived in the Victorian era and become one of the hubs of the industrial revolution - later producing such famous vessels as the QE2. Clydebank suffered when the industry declined but is now benefiting from a multi-million pound regeneration which features the huge Titan Crane, now open to the public.
West Dunbartonshire is a popular destination for a spot of retail therapy. As well as Loch Lomond shores, the town of Alexandria has an outlet centre in the former Argyll Motor Works which also houses a motor museum.
