The peaceful island of South Uist is the second largest in the Western Isles. It shares the typically beautiful scenery of this region in its stunning wide white-sand beaches, rocky hills and quaint stone and thatched cottages.
The charming fishing port of Lochboisdale is the main gateway to the island, taking passengers from the local ferry services. The Kildonan Museum tells the story of the island and the communities which make this such a welcoming destination. To immerse yourself even more in Celtic culture take part in the annual Ceolas music festival - a summer school of traditional music tuition, with open events in the evenings for all to enjoy.
The South Uist tourist information centre is at Lochboisdale and is open in the summer.
Just to the south is the wonderful island of Eriskay, reached by a causeway, with yet more lovely sandy beaches. This was where the ship the SS Politician sank in 1941 with a cargo of whisky. The locals (understandably) salvaged much of this, and the story was later used by the author Compton Mackenzie in his comic novel Whisky Galore
