Bradford-on-Avon
|
|
| Bradford-on-Avon,
rising above the River Avon, with the Kennett and Avon Canal
passing through, a small town to wander around when you visit.
Close to Bath and
the building are in the same honey coloured stone. The town
was once prosperous on wool as a weaving centre, the factories
still remain and the houses reflect the wealth of the factory
owners. Later industries included Avon Rubber manufacturing
tyres.
Bradford-on-Avon's
most famous building is in fact the bridge over the Avon,
the present one was built in the 17th century using a Norman
bridge as the basis, and has a room once used as a chapel
and later as a lockup.
Churches included
the almost unique, and small, Saxon Church, St Laurence, which
has been restored, the much larger Holy Trinity Church,
and, hidden at the top of the hill St Marys Tor, 1480, also
restored.
The narrow Shambles
was once the original market.
Tourist Information
Centre in the town. Some nice grand houses to explore in the
area.
