the name meaning "on the boundary", as the town was
once on the boundary of three manors.

with nice buildings, that once had a castle which was demolished
in the Civil War, the present one ins 19th century.
St John's church was
built for the castle in about 1120, and has an impressive
tower, the town has another church, St Mary's. Both have Norman
structures.
Timbered buildings
can be seen in St Johns Alley, they date from 1500, as well
as the Georgian buildings in the town.
There is a market

who died suddenly after cheating in the market.
