Devizes
|
|
| Devizes,
the name meaning "on the boundary", as the town was
once on the boundary of three manors.
A small town, but
with nice buildings, that once had a castle which was demolished
in the Civil War, the present one ins 19th century.
St John's church was
built for the castle in about 1120, and has an impressive
tower, the town has another church, St Mary's. Both have Norman
structures.
Timbered buildings
can be seen in St Johns Alley, they date from 1500, as well
as the Georgian buildings in the town.
There is a market
cross with an inscription about Ruth Pierce, a local woman
who died suddenly after cheating in the market.
A big attraction at
Devizes is the Kennet and Avon Canal which passes the town,
and its famous 29 locks built by Rennie, one of the largest
flights in the country.
There is a tourist
information centre in the town.
